The One and Only Ivan book cover

Starting this month, our three elementary schools will be embarking on a special project, an all-school book club called One District, One Book. Every family will receive a copy of the same book – Katherine Applegate’s The One and Only Ivan.

One District, One Book is a novel program in that children of all grade levels will all be listening to their parents read the same book. Strange or daring as that may seem, it actually makes sound educational sense. Reading professionals recommend reading material out loud that is beyond a child's own reading level. We also believe that you can and should continue reading chapter books with your older children, even when they are able to read by themselves. We have selected a title that can be followed and understood and enjoyed by younger students, but will still captivate and stimulate older children.

Birthday Ideas for Parents

In an effort to comply with new wellness policy requirements, model healthy behavior, be more equitable and conscious of allergies, ROCORI Schools will no longer be celebrating children's birthdays with birthday treats. Teachers and staff will continue to recognize your child's special day. This will be done through special activities and projects, recognition, etc. If your family would still like to send 'birthday treats', we are asking that they be non-food items. Below is a list of suggestions. Please do not feel obligated to send anything, this is only if you wish to.

ROCOR Action Pack Logo

ROCORI Action Packs are designed to provide quick, easy, nutritious meals that most elementary students are able to prepare without adult assistance. Packs are intended to help elementary students who could use additional food, or who may not have an adult at home to help prepare food, over a weekend. Packs, which are free, are sent home with students at the end of each school week (usually Friday) in a confidential manner. To sign an elementary student up to receive a weekly ROCORI Action Pack, please contact the student's school office.
